Why sleep is important

We are always told to get a good night’s sleep but we are never given a full reason as to why sleep is important for you.

We know how important healthy foods are and getting your daily dose of exercise is, so below we will explain why sleep is important for you; covering a range of health issues from weight, mental illness, concentration and much more.

1 – Poor sleep can make you fat
Sleeping short periods of time is one of the strongest factors of obesity with research showing people who sleep less weigh more than those who get the acceptable amount of sleep for them.

Due to fluctuations in a sleeping pattern over length and regularity, poor sleep affects your appetite, hence, why people who sleep less and/or poorly eat more and eat more calories to compensate for the sleep deprivation. Therefore, they get fatter.

2 – Poor sleepers have a greater risk of heart disease and health complications
Sleep deprivation and sleep restrictions can play a major effect on risk factors, including heart disease, blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity.

In several studies, short sleepers were found to be at a greater threat of heart disease and diabetes. Restricting your sleep to four hours a night over six consecutive nights can cause pre-diabetes symptoms.

3 – A good sleep improves productivity and performance
Sleep helps various aspects of the brain, including concentration, cognition, productivity and performance functioning at a high level, which allows you to make smarter, better and more calculated decisions.

Whereas, all those aspects can be negatively affected through a poor night’s sleep.

This is why a good night’s sleep can help a player perform at their best as their speed, cognitive skills, co-ordination, accuracy is heightened and they are able to perform at a higher level.

So to be like the best rugby players in the country, you need a good night’s sleep!

4 – Depression is linked to poor sleep
People who sleep poorly, whether that is their quality of sleep or lack of sleep, are more likely to suffer from mental health illnesses such as depression compared to someone who has a good night’s sleep.

Approximately 90% of patients who suffer with depression complain about their quality of sleep. With people who have insomnia or sleep apnoea indicating higher rates of depression than those without the issues and illnesses.

5 – Sleep affects your emotions and ability to socially interact
Researchers believe that a poor quality of sleep or lack of sleep affects our ability to process and recognise emotional information and social cues. Therefore, our ability to interact socially is significantly reduced.

Whether you are a sales consultant or rugby league player, a lack of sleep affects us all and you cannot function at your optimal level without a good night’s sleep.
